Sewing Together provides an opportunity for kids and teens (ages 8-18) to get together, make new friends while making fun projects. Sewists will learn to sew clothing, useful projects, and fun craft projects.
Sewing is a life skill that develops creativity, patience, self-esteem, and sense of accomplishment in the finished projects. STE(A)M is also an integral part of sewing.
Sewists start at the Beginner level working on projects and building their sewing skills. Sewists work at their own pace. Sewists with some sewing experience will be assessed for their knowledge and then placed at the appropriate skill level. Commercial patterns (patterns you see at fabric stores) and PDF patterns will be used. Hand sewing will be incorporated into some of the projects. Some projects might be strictly hand sewn.
Each level (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) has projects for the students to choose from and each level takes approximately one full school year to complete (September thru mid May). However, sewists can hop in a class at any time during the year. Projects can take 3-6 classes to complete depending upon the pace of the sewist.
Sewing machines and basic sewing tools are provided in class. Students are required to purchase their own fabric and notions for each project OR they can purchase supplies from me for an additonal cost (limited to choices on hand).
Students will learn. . .
- how to operate a sewing machine and use various sewing tools
- hand sewing stitches
- how to read and understand sewing instructions
- how to take body measurements
- how to modify patterns
- how to add various design elements for creativity
